Geometry, not guesswork
Surface area is pure geometry — the same cross-section dimensions behind our shape weights and 3D section viewer, turned sideways: perimeter × length. What it deliberately is not: a coating estimate. Spread rates, dry film thickness, transfer efficiency and zinc pickup are product and process numbers that belong to your datasheet and your galvanizer, so the calculator takes them as inputs instead of hiding assumptions.
Common questions
- How do you calculate the surface area of a steel beam?
- Cross-section perimeter × length. For a wide flange the perimeter works out to 2×depth + 4×flange width − 2×web thickness; a W21X50 carries about 5.6 ft² of surface per foot of length. Multiply by member length and piece count for the area to blast, prime or paint.
- How much area does a gallon of paint cover on steel?
- The theoretical spread rate is 1,604 ft² per gallon per mil of dry film at 100% solids — real products state a practical coverage on the datasheet that accounts for solids content, target DFT and loss. That number varies by product, which is why this calculator asks for your coverage rate instead of assuming one.
- Does galvanizing coat the inside of HSS and pipe?
- Yes — hot-dip galvanizing is full immersion, so vented hollow sections get zinc inside and out. That roughly doubles the coated area of a tube, which matters for galvanizing cost estimates priced by weight or surface. The calculator's inside-faces option adds the interior perimeter for exactly this case.
- Why is this a fraction higher than the AISC surface area tables?
- The calculator uses the straight-line cross-section outline; rolled shapes have fillets where web meets flange that shave a little perimeter off. The difference is a fraction of a percent — inside normal estimating tolerance, and on the safe side for coating quantities.
