Common questions

What does pipe schedule mean?
Schedule is a wall-thickness series, not a measurement. For a given nominal pipe size the outside diameter never changes — a higher schedule number means a thicker wall growing inward, a smaller inside diameter and more weight per foot.
What does schedule 40 mean?
The most common wall series for steel pipe. For NPS 2 that is a 2.375 in outside diameter with a 0.154 in wall — about 3.66 lb/ft. Through NPS 10, schedule 40 and standard weight (STD) are the same wall; at NPS 12 and above they diverge.
Is NPS the same as the actual pipe diameter?
Not below NPS 14. A 2 in nominal pipe is actually 2.375 in outside; a 1/2 in pipe is 0.840 in. From NPS 14 up, nominal size and outside diameter match.
What is the difference between STD, XS and XXS?
Legacy weight classes: standard, extra strong and double extra strong. STD tracks schedule 40 through NPS 10, XS tracks schedule 80 through NPS 8, and XS wall holds at 0.500 in for larger sizes. XXS is its own heavy series and does not follow schedule 160.
What is the difference between pipe and HSS round tube?
Different products and specifications: pipe runs on NPS and schedule under its own standards, while round HSS is called out by actual outside diameter and decimal wall. The shapes overlap in use as columns and braces, but their designations and design values are not interchangeable.
