How to read a mill test report
Every stick of structural steel arrives with a cert, and every AISC-certified shop lives or dies by keeping them straight. This is what each section of an MTR means, and a quick screen for the mechanicals.
The anatomy of a cert
Heat number
The furnace batch identifier — the link between the physical steel and this cert. If the number on the piece doesn't match a cert on file, the material is untraceable.
Specification line
The standards the heat is certified to. Dual and triple certification is normal: one heat often reads A992 / A572 Gr. 50 / A709 Gr. 50 because it satisfies all three.
Chemical analysis
The ladle chemistry — carbon, manganese, and the rest — against the limits of the certified specs. Carbon equivalent matters for weldability and is capped by some grades.
Mechanical properties
Yield, tensile and elongation from the mill's test specimens. These are what the checker below screens against the specified windows.
Country of melt and manufacture
Where the heat was melted and rolled — the line that decides Buy America / Buy American compliance on public work.

Common questions
- What is a mill test report?
- The mill's certified record of a heat of steel: its chemical analysis, mechanical test results, and the specifications it meets. It travels with the material and ties every piece back to the furnace charge it came from via the heat number.
- Is a mill test report the same as a mill test certificate?
- Yes — MTR, mill cert, mill test certificate and material test report are the same document under different names. Purchase orders and quality systems use the terms interchangeably.
- What is a heat number?
- The identifier of the furnace batch the steel was melted in. Every piece traced to that heat shares the cert. Heat-number traceability — matching the number on the steel to the cert on file — is the backbone of material control in a fabrication shop.
- Why is the cert's yield higher than the spec minimum?
- Mills aim comfortably above minimums so no heat fails. A992 certs commonly report yield in the mid-50s against the 50 ksi minimum. What matters is inside the window: A992 also caps yield at 65 ksi and the yield-to-tensile ratio at 0.85, so higher is not automatically better.
- Are MTRs required for AISC certification?
- AISC-certified fabricators must maintain material traceability appropriate to the contract — which in practice means collecting certs and being able to match steel to them. Job specs, especially public and essential-facility work, frequently require certs to be submitted, not just kept on file.
